The Cluny Animal Trust is moving beyond just dreaming of a better world for township animals. They are walking right into the heart of the community to build it!
Free State, South Africa (29 January 2026) – Every pet deserves to be loved, well-fed and treated with the best possible care, but sadly, many aren’t as fortunate. This is a reality that the Cluny Animal Trust is taking steps to address and change, one household at a time.
The veterinary welfare charity this week launched its first Door-to-Door campaign, which will see members visit homes in the township communities of Kgubetswana, Clarens, Mashaeng, and Fouriesburg to ensure that no pet is left behind.
“For a while now, we have been worried about animals falling through the proverbial cracks, and so we took some time to come up with a dedicated plan of action for 2026,” Cluny Animal Trust says.
Initially, one of the Trust’s members, Nico, would spend Tuesdays in Kgubetswana and Thursdays in Mashaeng townships to assist with vulnerable animals in need brought to him. However, a new strategy will see him spend the morning personally going door to door to check in on animals.
“This will also allow us to create a proper picture, like a census of where animals are and their circumstances. It is also a very good opportunity to educate animal owners about responsible pet ownership.”
In the afternoons, Nico will then set up a station, as he always has, at a designated point in the township, so that people can bring their animals to him.
“Yesterday [27 January], he went to eight homes. Good news, all of the cats and dogs were sterilised. A few of them required their vaccinations to be updated, so that was easy to do, and people paid towards them to be updated, which is also a positive sign.”

The Trust’s veterinary work is clear in the many success stories of concerned pet owners who are met with compassion and expertise, transforming desperation into relief.
While these door-to-door visits add to an already demanding workload, every step taken is a lifeline. It ensures that no animal is left in the shadows and that those who were once overlooked finally receive the care, dignity, and love they deserve.
