SANCCOB responded to reports of a dozen African Penguins which were impacted by an oil spill in Hout Bay last week. While the source of the oil remains unknown, the incident highlights the ongoing threat of oil pollution to these critically endangered birds.
Hout Bay, South Africa (28 January 2025) – Twelve African Penguins were rescued and admitted by the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) after a disheartening oil incident in Hout Bay, Cape Town on Wednesday 22 January, leaving the birds covered in the unrecognised substance.
While the type and source of the oil are unknown at this stage, the incident has been reported to the relevant authorities.
“The oil is light in colour and is not immediately visible on the feathers but does have a distinct odour,” SANCCOB shares.
Oil pollution remains a threat to the Critically Endangered African Penguin and other marine species. The marine conservation team used the unfortunate incident to remind and urge members of the public to avoid capturing any oil-affected birds for their own safety and, instead, report them to SANCCOB directly.
This unfortunate event underscores the importance of 24/7 readiness for marine conservation organisations like SANCCOB to effectively respond to such emergencies and ensure the survival of affected wildlife.
Sightings of oiled seabirds can be reported to SANCCOB Cape Town on 021 557 6155. For after-hour emergencies call on 078 638 3731.
