When an eight-year-old lion named Diego, scarred by years of neglect and trauma, roared for help, the world listened. Thanks to FOUR PAWS, his heartbreaking journey from a tiny cage in Slovakia to a sanctuary of hope is a powerful reminder that even the voiceless can find salvation.
Netherlands (10 November 2024) – Across the globe, incredible efforts are being made to give animals a voice. When it comes to protecting the vulnerable, there’s a collective power in people rallying together for good. This week, we celebrate Diego, an eight-year-old lion whose life has taken a turn for the better, thanks to the dedication of animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS.
FOUR PAWS, an international animal welfare organisation committed to rescuing animals from dire situations and advocating for their rights, stepped in to help this traumatised lion. The incredible organisation specialise in giving neglected and traumatised animals a second chance at life. Their sanctuaries around the world are safe havens for animals who have endured unimaginable hardships, and Diego is one of their latest success stories.
Born in Czechia in 2016, Diego faced a grim start to life. His first owner intended to sell him to be hunted for sport – a cruel fate narrowly avoided when an animal activist stepped in. But Diego’s rescue was only the beginning of his challenges. For years, he lived in a private tiger facility near Bratislava, Slovakia, confined to a small, barren enclosure with no means to live out his natural behaviours. It was a life that left deep physical and emotional scars.
“When we first visited him in Slovakia, he wouldn’t let anyone get near his enclosure and was charging at the fence. This is a clear defence mechanism and could even be a response to possible violence and abuse he might have endured,” shares Patricia Tiplea, Head of Wild Animal Rescue & Advocacy at FOUR PAWS.
But on 6 November, Diego’s life changed forever. After careful planning, FOUR PAWS safely transported him to the FELIDA Big Cat Sanctuary in the northern Netherlands. This sanctuary, run by FOUR PAWS, specialises in the care of traumatised big cats like Diego, giving them the time and space to heal. And Diego’s initial days at FELIDA have already shown promise. Though he arrived fearful, he has begun accepting food from his new caretakers.
Juno van Zon, Head of Animal and Facility Management at FELIDA, says, “It will take time to get over the traumas of his past and to build up trust, but we are already seeing progress.”
One of FELIDA’s goals is to provide Diego with companionship. Lions, by nature, are social animals, and efforts are being made to socialise Diego with a resident lioness. This companionship could be a vital step in his journey to recovery.
If all goes well, Diego might even eventually be transferred to the LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa. Situated in a vast natural setting, LIONSROCK offers big cats like Diego the opportunity to live out their days in a more species-appropriate environment, surrounded by the sounds and sights of the wild.
As he continues to heal, Diego represents something beautiful: the power of compassion and the belief that every animal deserves a chance at a brighter future. For now, Diego is safe, loved, and finally on his way to being the lion he was always meant to be.
