A long list of well-deserving animal welfare organisations has been selected as Santa’s recipients!
South Africa (10 March 2026) – Santa Cause for Paws, the charity that makes Christmas magical for shelter animals every year, has just shared its 2026 beneficiary list, and it’s a happy one! Over 189 animal welfare organisations across the country have been selected to receive gifts this coming festive season.
Last year, this small team of ordinary people – all of whom hold down full-time jobs and do this good work in their spare time – raised over R1.1 million in sponsorships. It went to 4558 animals across 216 organisations and every single cent was passed on.
The way it works is clever, and relies fully on public support.
Every year, organisations apply to be part of the drive and submit a genuine wish-list of what they need – food, treats, toys, the basics. Each one gets a Facebook album filled with photos of the animals in their care.
You – the reader and supporter – scrolls through, spot the face that gets you right in the heart, and comment ‘sponsor.’ Last year, each sponsorship was set at R250 to cover one animal. The money pools, the volunteers shop for exactly what each organisation asked for, and then the Christmas elves hit the road for deliveries!
There are so many organisations, big and small, that will benefit from this year’s drive.
Big SPCAs, tiny feral cat feeding projects, a donkey sanctuary, breed-specific rescues and rehabs, community clinics, and everything in between. It is the most honest picture of just how much animal care is happening in South Africa, most of it driven by love and very little else.
The team is upfront that not everyone who applied could be included this year – that’s just the reality of a volunteer-run operation relying on public support. But they’re asking us to look at that list and feel the weight of what the community makes possible year after year.
“We are incredibly thankful to each and every person that sponsors an animal,” they say. “Whether it’s supporting one animal or ten, we are blessed to have such amazing supporters.”
