South African organisation Greenpop has been selected as a support partner for the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration campaign which is a massive honour!
South Africa (03 June 2021) – Greenpop has been selected to be an official Supporting Partner of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
Greenpop was founded in 2010 with the goal of planting more trees in South Africa. Since then, the organisation has grown from strength to strength. Greenpop works all over the country to plant trees. Since 2010, Greenpop has planted over 130,000 trees around South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa.
Part of their project has been more than just planting trees, it has been about restoring the forests that have disappeared over time. The United Nations saw this and selected the local organisation to join their Decade of Ecosystem Restoration.
Ecosystem restoration means assisting in the recovery of ecosystems that have been degraded or destroyed, as well as conserving the ecosystems that are still intact. All kinds of natural as well as human-made ecosystems can be restored, including forests, farmlands, cities, wetlands and oceans.
A forest plays an integral role in the environment. To start, it is a habitat for millions of living things, from birds and mice to monkeys and more. A forest then also provides the air we breathe, not all of it but a substantial amount. Lastly, a forest is an incredible renewable resource of wood. Forests also offer watershed protection, prevent soil erosion and mitigate climate change.
Restoring ecosystems, large and small, protects and improves not only our planet but also the livelihoods of billions of people who depend on them. With a focus on forests, Greenpop has been doing this for some time, making them the perfect support partners for this next decade.
The primary aim of the Decade, which runs from 2021 – 2030, is to prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems worldwide. In addition, the Decade aims to inspire and support organisations, communities and individuals to collaborate and develop the appropriate skill sets for catalysing and successfully implementing restoration initiatives across the world.
Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (UN Decade) is a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, for the benefit of people and nature.
“As a Supporting Partner, Greenpop will be assisting with the promotion of the Decade’s key activities and priorities, as well as reporting our restoration KPI’s where it supports the goals of the Decade.”
This is incredible news for the proudly South African organisation. You can find out more here about Greenpop along with all the other UN support partners via the World Environment Day event taking place on the 5th of June.
