The 21-year-old coastal cleaner on a mission to restore South African beaches to their best, shared exciting news recently! Over 1.5 tonnes of litter have been removed already.

South Africa (20 June, 2023)—In a South Africa where environmental consciousness has never been more present, young people are leading the charge. One of them is 21-year-old Zoë Prinsloo, Save a Fishie’s founder who recently embarked on a trash-bashing quest to clean the coasts of South Africa.

A cross-country beach clean-up 5 years in the making, the big goal is to restore over a hundred beaches to their litter-free beauty.

The Coast to Coast trek began in May along the West Coast, heading East. While the daily clean-ups are still on, an incredible halfway mark has already been celebrated!

Yesterday, Save a Fishie shared the news that 1.5 tonnes of litter have already been removed, including plastic, polystyrene, glass, micro-plastics and nurdles amongst all the other trash that has no place in nature. Some of the items discovered had been there for even longer than some volunteers’ lifetimes like a Coca-Cola bottle from 1996!

Beyond relieving the trash problems, Save a Fishie’s efforts also leave better things behind. Some of their beyond-the-beach efforts on the trip have included teaching schoolchildren why litter is a problem for marine life as well as uniting local communities to become active citizens.

More good things are to come as the trip treks on and the Coast to Coast cleanup is still underway until July. You can keep up with Save a Fishie’s beach makeovers here or support the volunteers here.
