Not just one, but two South African teenagers have been crowned young environmental queens after winning international eco-conscious pageants!
Global (22 November 2023) — South African teenagers have earned acclaim in the space where pageantry and environmental activism meet.
With the recent crowning of South African Chloé-Jade Christian as Miss Teen Earth and Enhle Madakane as Miss Eco Teen International, the strong connection between the South African youth and the environment becomes both evident and dazzling.
While Enhle made history in Egypt by becoming the first young black woman to be crowned Miss Eco Teen International, Chloé-Jade also made South Africa proud by bringing home the conscious crown from the Miss Eco Teen pageant in Ecuador.
Although the competitions the young women took part in were different, the bigger opportunity to use pageantry glitz to raise awareness for environmental good is abundant in both.
For Chloé-Jade, she shares that her sashay isn’t just a title, but a commitment. Speaking to IOL following winning the international title, she shared that she wished to promote environmental education in both schools and communities so that everyone realises they can be a part of a sustainable future.
As for Enhle, it’s the opportunity to push for advocacy from her generation and inspire platforms to let more young black women shine in their talents and ideas.
Meanwhile, on the biggest-known pageantry stage of all, Bryoni Govender brought all the South African flare to the Miss Universe competition and brought home a crown smelted with local pride and support.
