When the SPCA Pietermaritzburg team arrived in New Hanover to assist animals affected by the devastating floods, they were met with a heartbreaking scene.

New Hanover, South Africa (04 December 2025) – South Africa’s weather has been experiencing its fair share of dramatic shifts as of late, with animals being the most vulnerable victims.

Last week, the SPCA Pietermaritzburg received an urgent call from the Greytown SPCA team regarding severe flooding in the New Hanover area early Monday morning.

“Without hesitation, Wandile contacted Ward Councillor Mr SK Khumalo and immediately set things in motion,” the SPCA Pietermaritzburg reported in a post.

After making the necessary arrangements, the SPCA team headed straight to the small town. When Wandile, Sifiso, and Sihle arrived, what they found was heartbreaking: Eleven dogs – cold, wet, some appearing injured and desperately needed help.

The floods left a trail of destruction, with roads and homes severely damaged, families’ belongings washed away, and their animals caught in the crossfire.

Some pet owners were so overwhelmed by the devastating situation and loss that they chose to surrender their animals to the Pietermaritzburg SPCA for their safety and proper care.

Though that Monday proved a tougher day than most, the dedicated animal rescuers worked hard to get every animal out of further danger.

“Despite the difficult conditions, our team, along with the other dedicated people on site, spent the entire day rescuing, comforting and ensuring that every animal possible was taken to safety.”

The team has since been lauded by South Africans online, thanking everyone involved for helping distressed families and saving precious animals in their hour of great need.

“You all work so hard for the community and the SPCA. Thank you all for what you do,” one proud person commented.

SPCA Pietermaritzburg thanks everyone who worked tirelessly on the day and those who support animal welfare during such difficult times.
