As firefighters continue to battle the Table Mountain fire, the SPCA Search and Rescue are on the ground to help the impacted wildlife, and they need Cape Town’s help!

Cape Town, South Africa (26 February 2025) — As firefighters battle the Table Mountain fire bravely, the call is out to support those impacted, including the wildlife.

South African National Parks has communicated that firefighting efforts continued this morning in the Table Mountain National Park following a flair-up induced by winds last night.

Firefighters, helicopters and volunteers have all given their service in an effort to contain the flames in the affected areas, and now it’s time for the public to do their part.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has shared that Search and Rescue have been deployed to assist wildlife, but they need Capetonians to help their efforts along.

“The fire that tore through Table Mountain overnight may soon be contained, but for the animals caught in its path, the crisis is far from over. Our Inspectors are on the ground right now, ready to search for and help injured wildlife—and they won’t stop until they are sure that every animal in need of help has received it.”

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has urged public support in the following ways:

  • Support for those on the ground with energy drinks or energy bars, eyedrops or burn shield dressing.
  • Putting out shallow dishes of water for displaced animals with added stones so small animals can also enjoy a drink.
  • Keeping an eye out for animals that look displaced or hurt
  • Should you find an injured animal and the situation seems safe, the SPCA advises placing it in a ventilated cardboard box with a towel. If the animal is burned, use a sheet.
  • Make sure to keep the animal calm by separating its box from any other people or pets and cover the box.
  • Call the SPCA team immediately at 021 700 4158/9 so they can come to you and assess the animal.
