Byron Thanarayen and his wife Melissa were left speechless when they checked their security footage last week; they saw their Staffie had saved their Toy Pom from drowning.
Johannesburg, South Africa (15 April 2021) – Byron and Melissa Thanarayen were so proud of their Staffie Jessie after learning that she saved their Toy Pomeranian Chucky from drowning.
Last week Friday, while the couple were away from home, a harrowing incident took place in their swimming pool. Jessie and Chucky have access to all parts of the house; when the couple are not home, they are able to take shelter indoors or head into the yard as they need.
Chucky, Melissa’s 13-year-old Toy Pomeranian, was walking around the pool when something behind him caught his attention. He turned to look, setting his balance slightly off and as he turned back around, lost his footing and slipped into the pool.
Jessie heard Chucky and quickly rushed to his aid. Chucky struggled around the pool, desperately trying to get out, and Jessie urged him towards the edge where she would be able to pull him up. After several failed attempts and 34 minutes later, Jessie was finally able to get a grip of Chucky’s ear and help pull him up and out of the water.
Jessie, a 7-year-old, 3-time-rescue from the SPCA, has been crowned a hero for her efforts to save Chucky. She never gave up and stood by the pool until she was able to rescue her beloved friend.
According to the Thanarayen’s, she was adopted by a family and quickly returned once they deemed she didn’t get on with their own pets. Still, when the couple adopted her 4 years ago, they had a very different experience. Jessie quickly adopted her fellow housemates and became very close and attached to them.
Their family unit has been so blessed since welcoming Jessie into their home and now even more so!
The couple only realised what had happened by their pool once Melissa checked the security footage. She had come home and found Chucky was wet but couldn’t explain why. Once watching the footage, she was shocked to her core by the incident.
Never in the 13 years of having Chucky had he ever been near the pool as he was that day. The incident has been such an eye-opener for the couple that they have started the process of getting the pool covered.
Accidents do happen, and thankfully Jessie was there to ensure this one would have a happy ending. You can watch the harrowing rescue below.
