Sometimes the gap between despair and hope really is only a few centimetres wide.
Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa (09 October 2025) – Two stray kittens in Sanctor are safe thanks to a rescue effort by two kind men with big smiles and big hearts, with enough space for all the kittens!
It started with a frantic call from a homeowner who could hear desperate cries but couldn’t reach the kittens. The tiny pair had somehow slipped into the narrowest of gaps between two walls, where they had lodged themselves. Too little to climb out on their own, and completely out of reach for human hands.
Thankfully, most of our stories involve heroes who step in even when the odds are stacked. Inspectors Clayton and King from the Animal Anti-Cruelty League Port Elizabeth rocked up to save the day.
At first glance, it looked impossible. The space was barely a few centimetres wide, their usual rescue tools were useless, and the kittens were lodged far down. Giving up is not in any animal welfare hero’s vocabulary, though, and so they made a plan.
Clayton and King improvised. Crawling around the ceiling for hours, they pieced together a makeshift tool long, thin and secure enough to safely scoop the kittens out. But of course, nothing with kittens ever goes according to plan. The scared little ones kept wriggling away, making rescue attempts even trickier.
After repeated tries (and no shortage of patience), the plan finally worked. One by one, both kittens were gently pulled to safety.
And because good things rarely happen alone, another hero stepped up. Kitten Rescue’s foster mom, Vicky, opened her home to the pair until they’re strong enough to be adopted into loving forever families.
Later, the Animal AntI-Cruel League decided to honour their heroes by sharing the story along with a video documenting the rescue. We just can’t get over their smiles as they collect a well-deserved cuddle from their rescues!
