Shalin Fernando (33), captured the moment a lioness feircly protected her lion cub from a Wild Dog attack at the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana.
Wild dogs can be very confident and intimidating when gathered in their pack. They have no fear when it comes to taking on the bigger lion species.
Shalin Fernando (33), captured the moment a lioness and her lion cub were repeatedly harassed by a pack of Wild Dogs at the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana. The lioness did everything in her power to protect her cub and take down as many of the dogs as possible.
At first, they seemed to just be yapping and barking but they got brave and trouble ensued. The lioness lunged for one of the dogs and became engulfed in dust and dogs. It seemed as though the lion cub just vanished at that moment.
If you watch the lion cub closely, you can see as the dust kicks up, it makes a dash for safety behind the cluster of tree stumps at the back end of the video. It seems only one dog noticed this escape, all the rest were focused on the biggest threat.
“I was speechless and worried for the lioness and her cub. According to our guide, all of her previous cubs didn’t survive. The dogs kept on trying to attack, but later on, they gave up and moved on. The lioness and her cub were safe.”
Shalin and her guide had been watching the small lion family a few moments before leaving. It was when they returned that the chaos broke out.
“We spent about half an hour with a beautiful lioness and her cub when we then moved on looking for wild dogs. Later we came back to the same site after hearing that there were wild dogs chasing some impalas. When arriving on the scene the wild dogs came upon the female lioness and her cub and began threatening them.”
Thankfully, the ranger later confirmed that both the lioness and her cub were safe. You can watch the hair-raising encounter below. Watch it with sound on for the best effect!
