South Africans are using social media to help each other find lifts as the national bus strike threatens Easter traveling plans.
Just days before the national Easter weekend holidays, long-distance bus operations have stopped operating completely as a result of a nationwide bus strike, leading to growing fears thousands of commuters could be stranded over the Easter weekend.
Greyhound and Citiliner announced on their websites that they are refunding tickets for bookings made in advance.
On Wednesday the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) said they would “intensify” their strike after they rejected a 9% wage increase offer by employers.
Striking unions‚ including the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) and Numsa‚ are asking for a 12% increase as well as an increase in overtime pay.
Meanwhile‚ South Africans have taken to social media to find lifts‚ and make new friends in the process.
Many people have started connecting on Facebook joining lift clubs or sharing status to travel vast distances while some users on Twitter are spreading the message and helping fellow South Africans get to their destinations by using the #keepSAmoving hashtag.
