A creative recipe blends Amarula with the comfort of French Toast, proving that unexpected combinations can be irresistible.

South Africa (27 August 2025) – When you think of Amarula, you probably picture it poured over ice, mixed into a cocktail, or, as the case may be, savoured as a creamy after-dinner indulgence. On the other hand, French Toast is the ultimate breakfast comfort. Put them together and you get something unexpected. A very adventurous dish: Amarula French Toast.

The recipe, beautifully shot by Kenneth Tebogo Middleton and shared on Facebook, quickly caught attention for its clever use of the South African favourite. Who would have thought Amarula could move from the drinks cabinet to the breakfast table?

The process begins with the Amarula filling. A smooth blend of cream cheese, icing sugar, vanilla, and, of course, the star of the show, Amarula. This creamy mixture is spread onto slices of bread, setting the stage for a stack.

Next comes the custard base. Whisk together eggs, milk, a little sugar, cinnamon, salt, and another hint of? You guessed right,  more Amarula. Each slice of bread is soaked in this mixture before being fried gently in butter until golden brown on all sides.

To finish, the Amarula French Toast is served warm with a drizzle of maple syrup or honey, the sweetness balancing beautifully with the rich cream filling and the subtle kick of Amarula.

Whether enjoyed as a show stopper for the next time you are hosting brunch, a festive dessert, or simply a weekend treat, this recipe shows just how versatile South Africa’s iconic liqueur can be. Amarula in your French Toast? It works, and it can be indulgent.

And if you are feeling creative, you can add your own twist. Garnish with berries, extra icing sugar, or even top it off with whipped cream. Amarula French Toast is proof that bold flavours can turn breakfast into something unforgettable.
