This creator shares a playful guide to South Africa’s most iconic greeting, highlighting the humour and social cues in every “howzit”.

South Africa (24 November 2025) – South Africans don’t just say hello; sometimes, they say howzit. And depending on where you are, who you’re talking to, or how long it’s been since you last saw them, that single word suddenly has endless versions and meanings.

Gregory Bakker recently posted a video demonstrating just how many howzits exist in everyday South African life. It’s a masterclass in social cues.

Here are some that every South African will recognise:

  1. The Standard Howzit – Quick, casual, efficient. No raised eyebrows. Just: “howzit.”
  1. The Long-Time-No-See Howzit – This one comes from the heart. It stretches just a little: “HOW-ziiiit!”
  1. The Introvert Howzit – Soft. Gentle. Almost whispered. No eye contact.
  1. The Barista Howzit – Given while staring directly at the menu, not the person. It’s often rushed
  1. The Police Station Howzit – High stress levels. This is the “I’m about to file a complaint” howzit.
  1. The Google Meet Howzit – Usually followed by, “Uh, can you guys hear me?” Leans forward and taps mic.

What makes the video so funny is that every version feels spot-on.

Because in South Africa, howzit isn’t just a greeting, it’s an emotion, an update and sometimes even a warning signal.
