Flash Mob

The Gautrain offered travellers free transport over the past weekend, and while the station was busy, a flash mob broke out and brought joy to all!

Sandton, South Africa (29 August 2022) – Remember when flashmobs used to pop up all over the world and bring total joy to all those around them? Well, they are back, and we love it!

A group of South African dancers gave commuters of the Gautrain a show, surprising everyone when a flash mob started. At first, it seemed like a solo performance, but then the crowd became the mob, and before long, everyone was dancing along.

Following the success of the Free to Move promotion in February 2022, the Gautrain hosted a similar promotion on the 27th of August, called the Free Travel Spree. This promo gave Mzansi the opportunity to experience the Gautrain services, free of charge. On the day, approximately 75,000 people joined the promo and used the Gautrain services to and from multiple stations and destinations.

“To help create a holistic family outing on the day, we developed various partnerships with the likes of the City Sightseeing bus, Gold Reef City, Mall of Africa, Menlyn Maine, McDonalds, and The Zone. In addition, we hosted a flash mob that we carefully planned so that we entertain our guests and celebrate the day together. Like sport, music and dance has the power to unite people and to create camaraderie and joy – and this is what we had hoped for on the day,” Gautrain representitive.

The fun, carefree dancing is bringing smiles to people across the world, reminding us all that a little song and dance can renew hope. Watching the joy everyone felt, may have brought a little tear to the eye. The video definitely embodies the rainbow nation of South Africa.

The flash mob ended off the entire performance with the Jerusalema dance, and of course, spectators that knew the dance joined in.

“Thousands of people have since asked whether the flash mob was planned, as it appeared to happen so spontaneously. The answer is yes. We carefully planned each and every element of the promo and the flash mob, as well as the choice of music, was no exception.”

Take a look at the Gautrain video below. Have you ever seen a flash mob in action? This is such a feel-good video, and we hope it brightens your day as much as it did ours!
