As the FNB Varsity Cup kicks off Round 2, students turn stadiums into comedy stages with clever signs.

South Africa (24 February 2026) – Monday nights just got louder, wittier, and a whole lot more fun. The second round of the FNB Varsity Cup brought not only fast, fearless rugby but also a hilarious display of fan creativity across campuses.

From the clever geography hints to checkboxes about student life, these signs had everyone laughing while cheering on their teams.

University of Pretoria- TUKS vs IKEYS

At Tuks’ match, one sign read, “High altitude, high standards”, a playful nod to Pretoria’s inland elevation.

Some signs got even more interactive. One clever board presented a choice like a checklist. Right next to it, another Tuks fan, “Tuks stronger than Cape Town’s wind”, poking fun at UCT’s famously breezy campus.

Stellenbosch University- Maties vs UJ

A small sign boldly declared, “Stellenbosch is better than UJ”, and cited Wikipedia as the source.

North West University- NWU vs Emeris

And then there was a group simply enjoying the moment, waving a sign simply written “The Okes”, a reference to a memorable clip from a few seasons back, when the commentator called a group of fans “the okes and not the boys.”

It’s these moments that make varsity rugby more than just a competition. It’s a weekly ritual where campuses come alive, students unite, and creativity flows as freely as the cheers.
