This matric dance proposal stole South African hearts! In a gesture often reserved for movies, a Dainfern College student serenaded his soon-to be-date in front of the school. Have a listen:

Dainfern, South Africa (22 May, 2023)— They say the era of grand romantic gestures died with the 80s boombox, but this matric student is challenging the narrative.

In an era where ‘good morning’ texts are considered romantic and sharing funny videos is a love language in and of itself, there’s something to be said about bold romantic displays. Over the years, ‘promposal season’ (where students ask fellow students to the dance) has become an anticipated reminder that the romantic still lives in the 2020s.

In a recent moment at Dainfern College, one grade 12 student took his gesture to the school’s stage. He didn’t simply ask  Khanyi Ngcobo to be his date for the dance in front of the school (though that would’ve been a certified main character moment all on its own), but also hit the ivory keys to seal the deal.

Bringing Golden Hour to the hall, the student serenaded his soon-to-be-date with a gorgeous rendition of JVKE’s butterfly-inducing piece. Onlooking students screamed in excitement as soon as the music filled the room in a moment that reminded South Africa that the kids are more than alright; they’re romantics too.

Khanyi shared the moment on her TikTok, noting that the bar is officially “too high”.

Meanwhile, in another recent display of love going to great lengths, a South African man took a brisk walk from Cape Town to George (over 500kms) in an act of love for his wife.

We love to see all of it!
