Organisation Needs Volunteers to Help Plant Fynbos Gardens in Cape

Greenpop is calling on volunteers to help work on fynbos gardens for schools in the Western Cape; they have installed seven gardens to date.

Western Cape, South Africa (12 May 2022) – Greenpop was founded in 2010 with the goal of planting more trees in South Africa. Since then, the organisation has grown from strength to strength. They do not only plant trees now; various projects include food gardens and fynbos gardens.

Greenpop works all over the country to plant trees. Since 2010, Greenpop has planted over 130,000 trees around South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. Now they are hoping to plant 500,000 by 2025.

Aside from their tree planting initiatives, they also hope to create green spaces at schools in the Western Cape. Last year, the organisation started an initiative to create Fynbos gardens at under-greened schools. The organisation has planted a total of 7 school gardens so far. They are looking for help to keep them maintained.

“We are in search of some active citizens to assist us on planting days for our Fynbos for the Future Programme. Volunteers will be helping us with planting, weeding, propagation and garden maintenance.”

“Fynbos for the Future aims to provide interactive fynbos learning spaces in under-greened schools and implement a 3-year programme engaging students and communities in the effective management and conservation of fynbos.

The vision for Fynbos for the Future is to inspire a green urban future, where biodiversity is accessible, valued, and protected by an active, engaged, and inspired citizenry through community-oriented urban nature conservation.”

The volunteers will be planting fynbos plants, weeding the gardens and working on propagation for further planting. The plant days will run from 9 am to 12 pm.

They need volunteers for the following dates and schools.
