The golden oldies had a fun day out at the Green Point Track by taking part in the Golden Games, otherwise known as the Seniors Olympics.
Green Point, South Africa (02 November 2022) – The annual Golden Games took place this week at the Green Point Track. Hundreds of older residents from surrounding areas participated in the event which is also known as the Seniors Olympics.
The annual event is hosted with the aim of empowering the elderly and encouraging them to keep physically active and healthy. This is done through the use of fun, interactive games. Some of these games included replays, egg and spoon races, bowling and so much more.
It is safe to say that the Golden Games are a highlight for the elderly involved. The elderly come from community senior clubs from Hangberg, Imizamo Yethu, Woodstock and Bo-Kaap. Nearly 100 seniors joined the event.
“Our older residents play an important role in our communities as they bring wisdom, experience and calm. They are also one of the vulnerable groups and are often neglected or forgotten. Our senior clubs give them the opportunity to interact socially with their peers and enjoy recreational activities to keep them healthy and alert,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
According to the City of Cape Town, the highlight of the day was a freestyle dance competition, which brought about much fun and laughter as the seniors cheered each other on.
At 82 years old, Ms Juliana Opperman from Hangberg was the oldest participant on the day, proving that one can maintain a healthy mind and body at any age.
