The helpers have joined the effort to restore parts of the Overberg National Park.
Western Cape, South Africa (18 August 2026) – Bontebok National Park is recovering after severe flood damage. SANParks Honorary Rangers and staff are working together to restore damaged areas.
Heavy rainfall in May earlier this year caused the Breede River to burst its banks, causing damage to infrastructure and trails across the park and forcing a temporary closure.
In July, members of the Agulhas Region of the SANParks Honorary Rangers worked alongside SANParks staff in helping with the clean-up work needed after the floods affected areas.

With brooms, power hoses, rakes and saws in hand, helpers have removed mud and debris from trails, created an alternative route around a washed-away section of the Aloe Hill Trail, and cleaned flooded chalets. Wooden decks and windows were scrubbed to remove stubborn mud, while trees and debris were cleared and the campsite received attention.
The restoration work has helped Bontebok National Park begin a phased reopening, some key areas have already begun welcoming visitors again.

SANParks says that the rehabilitation work continues in other affected parts of the park. Additional facilities and visitor experiences are expected to reopen as restoration progresses.
“A heartfelt thank you to all the SANParks Honorary Rangers and SANParks staff for this incredible teamwork.” SANParks shares.
