The second episode of The Hope Dealers heads into Johannesburg’s inner city, where a school is proving that a great education can change everything!
Johannesburg, South Africa (12 August 2026) – Mandy Wiener’s search for the people changing Johannesburg with one good deed at a time continues!
In The Hope Dealers, Wiener is travelling across the city to meet the individuals and organisations restoring, rebuilding and breathing new life into their communities. Each episode shines a light on the stories that rarely make the headlines, but deserve to.
Last week, the series kicked off in Alexandra, where Mandy met the team behind Gcwalisa, a refill container shop serving its community while helping reduce plastic waste. This week, she heads into the heart of Jozi’s inner city to visit CityKidz, a school proving just how life-changing a good education can be.
CityKidz opened its doors in 2008 after property developer Renney Plitt and Afhco Holdings recognised that strong communities need good schools to thrive.
The independent school was created to give inner-city children access to an excellent education at fees families could realistically afford. Smaller class sizes, spacious classrooms and a curriculum that includes STEM, robotics and the arts give children a learning environment that sets them up for the future.
That commitment is meaningful in Johannesburg’s inner city, where many schools are stretched by overcrowded classrooms and limited resources.
As Renney Plitt, Co-founder and Chairman of the Board, puts it:
