Madagascar Dog Louie Looking for Love After Brutal Attack

After being blinded and broken by a machete attack in Madagascar, Louie is safe in South Africa and ready to hobble into someone’s heart.

Hoedspruit, South Africa (23 June 2026) – Louie is three years old. He has one eye, three legs, and more love to give than most animals twice his age and half his hardship. What he has been through is totally incomprehensible. But he made it through, and now he’s waiting for someone to choose him.

Louie’s story begins far from South Africa, on the island of Madagascar, where a woman named Vanessa spotted him. He was skeletal. He was hobbling. He was barely alive. What he had survived was brutal beyond measure.

“A man attacked him with a machete – slashing his face and blinding him in one eye , breaking the femur near the hip joint and severing all the toes on his left hind foot. For 5 months with no one to help him, Louie was walking on a broken leg and badly infected foot to find food and water.” shared Hoedspruit Paw.

Five months of pain, alone, refusing to give up on a life that had given him very little reason to hold on. When Vanessa found him, that chapter finally closed.

A GoFundMe campaign was started, and the funds that came in made it possible to give Louie the medical care he urgently needed. His leg was amputated, blood tests were run, medications were administered, and Louie was vaccinated.

When all the paperwork was done, Louie made the journey to South Africa, battered but braver than most. He has done the hard part. Now comes the good part. If only someone would step forward to give it to him.

Vanessa, who rescued him and carried him across an ocean, doesn’t have a permanent home of her own right now. She cannot keep Louie, as much as her heart might want to. And so Hoedspruit Paws – a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving the lives of animals in and around Hoedspruit – is helping to find this extraordinary little dog the extraordinary home he deserves.

The horrible life he has lived has not stolen his spirit, his warmth, or his capacity to love without condition, despite every reason the world gave him not to.

He is only three years old and has a whole life ahead of him with belly rubs and slow morning walks, a sunny spot on the floor, and someone who loves him more than he has ever been able to know. He just needs the person who is ready to be that for him.
