Imagine having to do a final hospitality practical examination and needing electricity but loadshedding is your reality… The matrics of Fish Hoek High pulled it off!
Fish Hoek, South Africa (28 August 2023) – It’s time for finals and as a martic, it can be pretty stressful. Add in the fact that South Africa is in a constant battle with loadshedding and it’s a whole extra level of stress on top. To make it easier for her matric students, teacher Rolanda Alexander from Fish Hoek High School challenged the Hospitality class to achieve their final practical using all cooking methods that didn’t need electricity.
Excited by the challenge, the students explored all the methods used to cook food without electricity. They came up with an incredible menu that included smoked foods, foods cooked in the acid of citrus, gas and coal/fire cooking.
From bread cooked over coals to smoked snoek pate made using the Weber and clever flavour techniques that would look great on any Michelin Star Chef’s menu.
Teacher Rolanda, who is credited as an inspiration for her dedication to her students, took to social media to share her pride in her students who put together such a decedent menu and nailed their brief.
“When you take pupils out their comfort zone and they produce amazing results, it makes it all worthwhile. Another Matric final PAT done and dusted. We thumbed our nose at Eskom and produced dishes without electricity. I’m so proud of these kids” – Rolanda Alexander
