What began as a desperate search for a meal turned into a warm home and a purpose for Meisie, a lonely stray who captured the hearts of the Philippi SAPS officers and soon became one of their most loyal protectors!
Philippi, South Africa (11 August 2026) – A stranded and hungry dog wandering around the Philippi Base in search of food quickly won the hearts of local SAPS officers, who couldn’t resist taking her in as one of their own.
“From the day she began begging for food in and around the base, she became part of our family,” says SAPS Philippi as shared by AfriPaw.
Growing concerned for her safety and well-being, the officers took it upon themselves to care for her. Members rallied together to provide meals, arranged for the Animal Welfare Society of SA to have her sterilised, vaccinated, and microchipped, and made sure she had a safe place to call home.
Named Meisie, the now happy-go-lucky dog has become far more than just a companion at Philippi Police Station.
“During the night, she remains alert and attentive, barking at unfamiliar movements or suspicious sounds,” the station noted. “Her instincts often alert the officers that something may not be right, making her a valued part of the team.”
AfriPaw also played a role in Meisie’s story by arranging a locally made, custom-built kennel for her, complete with an afdak shelter and mattress.
Officers collected the kennel at the organisation’s August Pet Clinic on Saturday. The timing was perfect, as the Animal Welfare Society of SA team, who provided all of Meisie’s veterinary care, was also present alongside some of her new police family.
She may have arrived at the base merely looking for a meal, but Meisie found a lifelong family instead. In return, she gives the Philippi officers her complete loyalty, companionship, and unwavering watchfulness.
