The Rhino Orphanage welcomes the eighth calf born this year – a crinkly-bummed boy belonging to six-year-old rescue, Jessie.

Limpopo, South Africa (02 July 2026) – The Rhino Orphanage has shared some happy news! Jessie – a six-year-old girl who was rescued by the centre in 2020 – has welcomed a boy calf!

Jessie was just four months old when she joined the orphanage after losing her mother to poaching. She had been on her own for at least two days before her rescuers found her, with a wound on her side – it seemed that poachers had struck at her, but she evaded their blows.

Her rehabilitation journey was tough, malnourished, and it took time for her to warm up to her carers. Slowly but surely, she recovered. Soon, she bonded with babies Amelia and Mapimpi, and the trio became besties.

Now, Jessie – old enough to have babies of her own – has welcomed a crinkly-bummed little boy – the eighth calf to join TRO this year!

“The Team is absolutely delighted to announce the birth of calf number EIGHT to a TRO orphan in 2026… thats a new rhino for every month of the year so far…plus a little extra.” the rescue centre shared. “We can not feel more blessed. The monitoring team has relocated Jessie and she had the tiny newborn baby close by her side. She was very calm but still a bit tired. Very attentive to the crinkly little one, gently nudging him, there wasn’t a more serene and peaceful scene.”

Jessie’s story is one of hope. It shows just how much can change with time, care and protection. A little rhino that arrived frightened, injured and alone has now become a mother, raising her own calf in the safety of the place that gave her a second chance.

This joyful full-circle moment speaks to the extraordinary work of The Rhino Orphanage, where saving one orphan can one day mean welcoming the next generation into a world far kinder than the one they were born into.
