Kindness Knitathon Leads to Hundreds of Goodies for Tiny Tots

A donation of over 200 knitted products made its way to Beanies 4 Babies thanks to a kindness knitathon supported by medical professionals and patients in Johannesburg.

Randburg, South Africa (14 January 2025) — While most of us started off 2025 feeling overwhelmed by the summer’s heat, many little tots born prematurely or at low birth weights faced the complete opposite. Beanies 4 Babies, a non-profit charity project that helps little lives prevent hypothermia and other low-weight-related challenges with warm, loving knits, is imperative to the babies who started off their lives on the cold foot. And this holiday season, the organisation got a big influx of support thanks to a kindness knitathon!

As Beanies 4 Babies shared with immense gratitude, the knitathon organised by a local chiropractor’s office in Johannesburg helped support their efforts with hundreds of knitted goodies.

This was the work of many patients and medical staff who all joined forces to support a better start to life for many extra-little South Africans.

The effort saw an impressive figure of 200 knitted products donated to Beanies 4 Babies, which in turn is gifted to babies in need as soon after their births as possible!

About Beanies 4 Babies

Beanies 4 Babies has been hard at work since 2018. Founded by then-healthcare students Johané Palko and Calrette Alfond, the two were inspired to offer a bridge of support after many rotations through the neonatal ICU at a hospital in Bloemfontein put the plight of the smallest babies into the spotlight.

What began as a few knits from volunteers has grown into the organisation widely respected today that helps around 1,000 babies every month across South Africa.
