Much more enrichment and time in the sun for the cats and kittens in care at the Kloof and Highway SPCA!
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (01 July 2026) – The Kloof and Highway SPCA has unveiled a brand-new catio! The custom-built outdoor enclosure gives its resident cats and kittens room to climb, play, and soak up the sun in a way their kennels simply couldn’t offer.
A kennel keeps a cat safe and cared for, but it’s still a small, enclosed space with limited stimulation. A catio is a major upgrade! It is an enclosed outdoor area that lets cats feel fresh air and natural sunlight, climb to different heights, and explore textures and scents they’d never encounter indoors, all without the risks that come with roaming free.
It’s more room to stretch, surfaces to scratch and climb, and sensory engagement that helps reduce stress and supports physical and mental well-being. All the good things that keep a cat’s world spinning.
“This beautiful space means our cats can now feel the sunshine, breathe fresh air, chase feathers, climb, and truly be cats again. What started with just one cat has grown into a happy group of six, all now enjoying hours of enrichment, socialising, and relaxation in the sun,” the SPCA shared.
“While they were safe and cared for in their kennels, nothing compares to the joy of this new freedom, something truly irreplaceable,” it added.
Helping hands from the community helped make it possible. The SPCA shared its appreciation for Freddie De Kok of Hendok Group, John Campbell of Steel and Pipes for Africa, and builder Daniel Stewart who all stepped in to help bring the project to life, donating their time, skills, and materials to give the shelter’s cats a much-deserved upgrade.
The SPCA is now inviting the public to help name the new space. Some fun suggestions have come through already! Cat Shack, Hotel Catafornia, Purradise, and Cat Crib are some of our favourites.
