South African DJ legend Lady Lea opens up about her journey, from sneaking into clubs with fake IDs to playing for more than a million people.

Johannesburg, South Africa (08 July 2026) – This week on Good Things with Brent Lindeque, I had the honour of chatting with Lady Lea, a South African who has spent more than three decades filling dance floors, breaking barriers, doing good things and inspiring generations of artists along the way.

Back in my varsity days, my friends and I would plan our weekends around where Lady Lea was playing. She wasn’t just another DJ on the line-up; she was the reason we went out. To now be sitting across from her, hearing the stories behind the music that became the soundtrack to so many great memories, felt like one of those wonderful full-circle moments.

Lady Lea’s career is nothing short of extraordinary. She started DJing at just 14 years old and has gone on to become one of South Africa’s most respected names in dance music. From clubs and festivals to fashion shows and sporting events around the world, she has built a career that has seen her perform everywhere from Ibiza to the legendary Love Parade in Germany, where she played to a crowd of more than a million people. But her influence reaches far beyond the decks. As the founder of Flipside Management, she has spent years mentoring and promoting South African artists while creating opportunities for others to follow their dreams. She also launched Divas on Decks, helping open doors for female DJs long before diversity in the industry became a widely discussed topic, and she continues to invest in both emerging and established talent through her mentorship programmes.

Our conversation covered everything from sneaking into clubs with fake IDs before she was old enough to be there, to the highs and challenges of building an enduring career in music. We laughed about unforgettable nights, spoke about what it feels like to stand in front of more than a million people, and even unpacked one of her latest adventures… helping Helen Zille step behind the DJ booth in a nightclub for the very first time.

Lady Lea is dynamic, incredibly talented and deeply passionate about what she does. She was such a fantastic guest, and our chat is filled with honest stories that remind you why following your passion is always worth it.
