Rescuing food from landfill to feed the needy is a great cause to get behind; to get the public involved, NOSH hosts dinner parties that highlight the incredible cause.

 

Johannesburg, South Africa (07 November 2022) – Sell-by dates on food are what shops go by when restocking the shelves. Some stores will mark down the price on the last day of the sell-by date and then if the item isn’t sold, they bin it… Yes, that is correct; food gets sent to landfill even if it is perfectly fine because of sell-by dates.

In South Africa, wasting food in such a manner is gutwrenching. We have millions of people living below the poverty line, going to bed hungry at night. There are charities that struggle to stay open and are in desperate need of food to help feed the needy.

NOSH Food Rescue NPC is an organisation that helps prevent food waste by collecting food, on the cusp of expiring, from supermarkets to donate to charities in need. The organisation was started to be the middleman between retail food waste and the people of South Africa in need of food. Currently, the organisation works in the Johannesburg area but hopes to grow and spread across the country, saving food and people in one swoop.

One of the initiatives the charity has done over the last few years has been to host odd plate dinners. These are run once a month and the funds raised are used to further support charities.

They bring in bright young chefs who work with the rescued food to put on a three-course meal (sometimes more) to show the public that rescued food is just as good as bought food.

NOSH is hosting the November Odd Plate Dinner on the 17th of November at the HTA School of Culinary Art in Randburg. Funds raised by the event go back into NOSH where they are then able to support soup kitchens and other food-reliant charities through the festive season.

The food rescued from landfill is all safe to eat and a great eye-opener to how much can be done even if food reaches its expiry date. We love that there are organisations out there working to rescue food and make sure people don’t go hungry!

You’ll be treated to a spectacular three-course (thought normally more) meal expertly prepared and exquisitely presented by the flamboyant Chef Renoir Sardinha, assisted by students from various culinary institutions around Gauteng, utilising salvaged and rescued foodstuffs that would otherwise have gone to waste. You will see that that even unloved produce, in the hands of skilled and talented culinary professionals, can shine and delight!

There will be a cash bar and a lucky draw and we’re hoping to have some live music to entertain you.

We know at this time of year the sky becomes dark with invitations – it’s not called the Silly Season for nothing – but we do hope to see you on the 17th, we have a lot to share with you!”
