Look at what bottle tops that didn’t end up as litter can achieve! Taxi ranks in Bellville have gotten a vibrant and mindful makeover, but there’s much more to this project than a little beauty:
Bellville, South Africa (12 March 2024)—If you’ve seen pictures of taxi ranks getting gorgeously vibrant makeovers on social media recently, you might be wondering who’s behind this artivist-approved action—a welcomed dose of more creativity following the mosaic magic along De Lange Street’s sidewalk.
The better.bellville.together.’ is the reason for the new injection of life and vibrance to Bellville’s taxi ranks. Putting bottle tops to much better use than they’d serve as waste, the initiative’s teams worked hard to dress up parts of the rank’s infrastructure; turning pillars into eco-eye-candy.

But the initiative extends far beyond taxi ranks, pillars and bottle tops. With the Greater Tygerberg Partnership driving a better Bellville and the City of Cape Town backing funding, big plans are on the cards (and canvas) for the suburb.

For one, the Bell Cape building welcomed a breathtaking mural embodying the initiative’s core sentiment—’Stronger Together’. Few visuals could capture this better than one showcasing the Springboks, and after many hours of work, that’s exactly what Diana Tinkerbell has been busy creating!
But, it’s not all about the art. At least, not in isolation.
According to the City of Cape Town, better.bellville.together. is as much about the economic growth that beautifying an area can spark. Launched in 2023, the community bettering Bellville have focused on environmental work (waste education programmes, recycling bins, and the Zero Waste Traders trial campaign) in collaboration with artistic efforts. Already, so many positives have come from focusing on a better Bellville, including job creation and a new spark for business and investment opportunities.
Art, eco-consciousness and hope joining forces? We’re inspired!
