The Butterfly Palliative Home has opened a new children’s hospice and is rallying to get a much-needed vehicle to continue their compassionate care for brave little ones and make “August Awesome”.

Empangeni, South Africa (14 August 2025) – The Butterfly Palliative Home, the first and only registered children’s hospice in rural KwaZulu-Natal in Ingwavuma, needs your help to make “August Awesome”.

After opening their second hospice facility in Empangeni this year, Butterfly Palliative Home has seen an increase in both reach and demand.

“We are able to help so many more children facing life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses. But we don’t have a vehicle. With our team needing to do hospital visits, home-based care and various activities to help our young patients, we need to raise the funds to purchase a preloaded vehicle,” shares co-founder Tarryn Bell.

Young children and infants with end-of-life or palliative needs are one of the most vulnerable groups within child protection, as they need special medical support – a disheartening reality Tarryn and her husband, Christoff, know well.

Built in honour of their late daughter, the Butterfly Palliative Home offers hands-on, full-time care to children from all over South Africa, also providing medical care without the need for a hospital placement. Staff and volunteers dedicate themselves to loving little ones as their own, helping them heal emotionally and physically, and learn to trust again as they enjoy their last months or years on earth.

This August, the organisation is aiming to raise R100,000 to purchase a small preloved vehicle that will significantly assist staff in providing essential medical and caregiver services.

“The situation is becoming more and more difficult. With no vehicle on site, all patient visits, hospital trips, and urgent errands are being done using our staff’s personal cars. This is placing real strain on our small team. We believe this little car can give us the “wings” we need, but we can’t do it without you.”

You can help by donating, spreading the word, hosting a fundraiser or getting in touch with the Butterfly Home to see how you can help them get their wheels.
