The Cape Philharmonic is striking all the right notes across schools in the Mother City.

Cape Town, South Africa (05 March 2026) – The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) visited Prestwich Primary recently, and the kids sang and clapped right through the concert.

For most of them, it was the first time they’d ever seen a live orchestra.

The CPO does this every year, reaching around 15,000 schoolchildren across Cape Town. Previous school concerts have been hosted at Kenridge Primary, Silversands, Jan Kriel School, Parklands College and many more.

Thousands of kids get to experience live orchestral music, which creates a positive influence early on.

In past years, the CPO has included a walkthrough of the instruments – how they work, what they sound like solo – before the full performance begins. Their sets generally mix classical, popular and film music, so there’s always something a child recognises.

Research shows that early exposure to music builds confidence, concentration and creativity in children. Getting kids into a concert hall – or bringing the concert hall to them – plants a seed that music can be accessible, moving, and worthy of pursuing.

“Our Schools’ Concerts programme is an indispensable part of our role in the musical life of the broader Cape Town community. Thanks to all the school administrators who make it possible for us to share the joy of music with children.” the CPO shared.
