In the heart of Soweto, an inspiring crocheting workshop is giving local mothers the opportunity to shape new futures, one stitch at a time.
Soweto, South Africa (12 April 2026) – The Hamba Bamba Funda (HBF) centre in White City, Soweto, recently came alive with creativity, possibility and skills development as local mothers got to learn the craft of crocheting.
The organisation’s Thriving Together mothers group in Kliptown was hosted at the very first session of the new crocheting skills development series – a collaboration with Pieter van der Westhuizen and the generous team from the Flower Foundation.
What unfolded in the room was far more than a lesson in crochet. It was a moment of surprise, joy, and possibility. One mother laughed as she said:
“I did not expect that we were actually going to learn how to crochet. I thought we were going to come and watch others crochet!”
Instead, they found themselves fully immersed. Hands busy, minds focused, and spirits lifted. The atmosphere was warm, encouraging, and filled with the quiet satisfaction that comes from learning something new.
More than just teaching a creative skill, the initiative seeks to empower these mothers to have the skills to create something of their own to hopefully generate an income for themselves and their families.
“This workshop is the beginning of a six‑part journey designed to equip mothers with a practical, income‑generating skill. By the end of the year, each participant will have created a finished product they can proudly sell at a local market,” HBF shared.
Each mother left with her own crochet starter pack, sponsored by the Flower Foundation: a crochet needle, wool, and the confidence to begin practising at home. They’ve been given their first piece of homework to complete before the next workshop on 11 April – a small step toward a much bigger goal.
This initiative is more than a workshop series, HBF emphasises. It is a pathway to dignity, creativity, and economic opportunity for mothers who carry so much on their shoulders.
