South Africa was crowned Africa’s most desirable country by Wanderlust Magazine in 2024… and while the news is doing the rounds again in 2025, we’re more than happy to celebrate it twice!

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 April 2025) – According to a few social media posts doing the rounds (and even a couple of media sites), South Africa has apparently just been crowned “Africa’s Most Desirable Country” for 2025 by Wanderlust Magazine, one of the biggest names in global travel journalism.

Well… kinda.

The truth is, we actually bagged that title last year already.

Not that we’re complaining, we’ll happily take the reminder (and the applause) any day of the week.

The accolade, handed out at the prestigious Wanderlust Travel Awards 2024, was a nod to everything we already know and love about South Africa: our natural beauty, our vibrant culture, our incredible tourism offerings, and, most importantly, the warmth of our people. From the awe-inspiring Table Mountain to the endless adventures in Kruger National Park, from the charm of the Garden Route to the electric energy of Cape Town and Johannesburg, Wanderlust readers fell head over heels for it all.

Tourism South Africa shared (at the time) how thrilled they were about the honour, saying, “This recognition showcases the incredible experiences South Africa offers and reaffirms our commitment to welcoming travellers from around the world.”

And it’s not just about pretty places (though we have those in spades). Readers praised South Africa’s rich cultural heritage, unforgettable wildlife safaris, drool-worthy culinary experiences and our genuine South African hospitality. We’ve also been making big strides in sustainable and inclusive tourism, making sure that as our industry grows, it does so in a way that benefits everyone.

If you’re wondering what’s next, the 2025 Wanderlust Travel Awards will officially take place on 5 November at the National Gallery in England. The nominations for this year’s awards are already out, and South Africa has once again made it onto the shortlist, featuring in categories like Best Attraction, Best Hotels & Resorts and Best Beach Destination.

So yes, the story might have gotten the year a little wrong but the message stays the same: South Africa is still topping charts and stealing hearts! And that is what we call good news!
