Cathcart High School in the Eastern Cape entered the 2017 School Enterprise Challenge and won, beating 5900 international schools.
The School Enterprise Challenge is organised by the UK charity ‘Teach a Man to Fish’. The 2017 challenge saw 5900 schools from 110 countries, enter. The challenge aims to create globally aware and socially responsible young entrepreneurs.
The challenge guides schools through the steps to set up a profitable enterprise that will benefit both the school and the students. Students develop essential skills in business and entrepreneurship in a practical, fun and innovative way.
The Cathcart High School joined the challenge and won. Their enterprise has been an incredible success since it was implemented. This is what they did…
Cathcart set up a cafe and furniture business. The students created the Dancing Taste Buds Cafe in their clubhouse that caters as a space for everyone to go and hang out. The cafe serves milkshakes and sandwiches.
The furniture side of the business is fantastic. The learners make use of recycled bottles to create stylish ottomans. These two enterprises won the school the ‘Best Business Idea’ award.
“I’m very proud of our pupils. They’ve really done well.” – Fiona Brown, the teacher coordinating the project
The students run everything themselves, from preparing the food to managing the books and doing all the marketing. A teacher does oversee everything but it is the students that make everything happen.
“The way these young people met this challenge was wonderful. I was blown away.” – Sue Spies, Programme manager
