Oh, to be 40 (or 50) and fabulous! A dynamic group of women are owning the invisible demands of midlife with a dose of fierce grace by embracing dance for joy, connection, and the sheer thrill of self-expression.
Johannesburg, South Africa (01 July 2025) – In an age-obsessed culture, one group of women is turning the spotlight onto confidence, conversation, and choreography, on their own terms.
Fabulously Forty-Fifty Something is an inspiring collective of all-female dancers, each over 40, some well into their 50s, who are embracing movement not for applause, but for joy, connection, and the sheer thrill of self-expression!
Founded and choreographed by Owen Lonzar, the group isn’t about the stage, at least not yet. These women gather weekly to dance, laugh, and swap stories about navigating the twists and turns of midlife, balancing careers, family, menopause, and the invisible demands of ageing, all with honesty, humour, and a fierce dose of grace.
They rehearse and then shoot a video, usually about a minute long, for social media and post the video on Instagram and Facebook.
“This group is a counter-narrative to ageism,” says Lonzar.
“They’re not dancing for anyone’s validation. They’re dancing for themselves—and finding community in the process.”

The group is inspired by the resurgence of older dancers on social media and by powerhouse performers like Pamela Anderson, Demi Moore, and Fernanda Torres, who are redefining stardom beyond youth.
“Mature performers have a level of self-awareness that is not based in insecurity but rather an understanding of their bodies, their sexuality, without seeking approval”
Through their growing Instagram account, they share short, playful dance videos that radiate joy, vitality, and authenticity.
Fabulously FortyFifty Something is a reminder that visibility matters, especially for women stepping into a new chapter with courage and creativity. Age, they prove week after week, is just choreography’s favourite number.
Any ex-professional dancers or women who have had some training are welcome to contact Owen Lonzar and try themselves out for a fun and empowering session.
“It’s not a paid class. It’s all for the love of dance over the age of 40,” he encouraged.
