A Netflix doccie, a horror film, addictive new tracks and a Cape Town gem… this week’s Friday Five is loaded with goodness.
South Africa (19 September 2025) – Forget algorithms, forget trending lists… this is the good stuff, straight from me to you. The Friday Five is where I get to rave about the movies that shook me, the songs I can’t turn off, the places I’ve fallen in love with and all the little moments that made my week better.
If you’ve been waiting for a sign to shake off the heavy news cycle and just dive into some joy.
This is it.
I often get invited to sneak peeks of films, early access to series before they land on your screens and the chance to experience events or spaces that are worth shouting about. Instead of “gatekeeping” those experiences, this weekly column is where I get to share them all with you. Think of it as your go-to guide for the good stuff: movies, music, series, food, travel… basically, all the lekker things that light up life.
🎬 Movies
😳 Beauty and the Bester
Okay, technically not a movie. It’s a 3-part series. But trust me, it feels like a film. And it’s one you need to watch.
The docuseries unpacks the true-crime saga of South African convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester and his accomplice, celebrity doctor Nandipha Magudumana. The crimes themselves are almost beyond belief, faked deaths, living in luxury mansions while on the run, even running a fake construction company. It’s dark, it’s absurd and it’s gripping from start to finish.
The most powerful moments were the interviews with families whose lives were shattered. Those raw emotions ground the madness in heartbreaking reality.
The only downside for South Africans who followed every headline is that it doesn’t uncover much new. But for an international audience, it’s an absolutely jaw-dropping ride.
🍿🍿🍿🍿 (this one gets a 4 out of 5)
Now streaming on Netflix.
🫣 Weapons
If you thought Barbarian was wild, wait until you see what Zach Cregger does here. Weapons is set in a small town where 17 schoolchildren vanish overnight from the same classroom. What unfolds is not just horror but a full-blown fever dream of mystery, dread and supernatural twists.
This isn’t a neat-and-tidy horror movie though, so don’t go in expecting that. It’s a rollercoaster. Brutal violence, disturbing imagery and tonal shifts that will leave you both rattled and impressed. Some people wanted a clean twist; what they got was something far stranger. And I kinda think that’s the point.
If you’re into horror that plays with boundaries and bends genres, this one will floor you.
🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿
Now showing in cinemas.
📺 Series
The Morning Show
One of my all-time favourites is back (as in, today), and yes, it’s just as juicy. Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston return in season four, set in the spring of 2024, right in the aftermath of the UBA-NBN merger.
The show is unapologetically high-drama, digging into themes like artificial intelligence, deepfakes, conspiracy theories and what “truth” even means in a divided world.
Is it realistic? Not at all. Is it entertaining? Absolutely.
🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 (DRAMA LAMA)
Now streaming on Apple TV+.
The Girlfriend
This one grabbed right from the start. Based on Michelle Frances’s novel, the show stars Robin Wright as Laura, a wealthy gallery owner whose perfect life starts crumbling when her son introduces his new girlfriend, Cherry (Olivia Cooke).
What follows is a twisted battle of wills, mother versus girlfriend, packed with love, power, greed and obsession. Wright and Cooke’s on-screen chemistry is electric.
It’s deliciously over-the-top and that’s what makes it such a fun binge.
🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 (weekend sorted)
Now streaming on Amazon Prime.
🎧 Music
This week’s playlist is all about vibes… the kind of songs you’ll want on repeat.
🎶 Kesha – “Tennessee”
Your weekend jam. Loud, unapologetic and perfect for letting loose.
🎶 Ed Sheeran – “Camera”
Pure Ed. A heartfelt love song that feels tailor-made for wedding playlists.
🎶 Carly Rae Jepsen – “Guardian Angel”
Didn’t think I’d be recommending Carly but here we are. Sweet and unexpected.
I’ve curated all of these (and a few extras) into a playlist on Apple Music. Sorry Spotify fam, I’m team Apple. But trust me, you’ll want this playlist on repeat.
🌍 Places to Go
This week, I’m featuring V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. Yes, it’s touristy. But it just keeps getting better (and bigger).
I was in Cape Town delivering two keynotes and grabbed lunch with a friend at the Waterfront. Afterwards, I wandered through the precinct and was reminded of just how magical it is. There’s the ocean on one side, Table Mountain looming on the other, world-class restaurants, quirky shops, art galleries and live entertainment around every corner.
It’s one of those spaces that feels alive… locals, tourists, families and business travellers all sharing one buzzing hub. Every time I’m there, I find something new to love. And ja, it’s a tourist trap but it’s also a gem in the heart of the mother city.

💙 One More Thing…
Good Things Guy has teamed up with Budget Insurance on something really close to my heart. We’re travelling across the country, giving back to people and organisations who need it most. A simple thank you, a small gesture but one that means everything to those on the receiving end.
We’ve released our first three episodes (you can watch them below), and we’re inviting you to be part of the journey. If you know a person, organisation, or cause that deserves a little love, nominate them by dropping us a mail at info@goodthingsguy.com.
That’s it for the Friday Five! I hope you find little sparks of magic in the ordinary this weekend… the kind that turns simple moments into unforgettable ones.
