In the chilly Free State, 20 dog beds were handed out to people in need; made for the Cluny Animal Trust, using recycled materials that would have ended up in landfills.
Free State, South Africa (28 June 2024) – As winter approaches, many people are thinking about donations that will keep animals warm. One generous donor went beyond and turned recycled materials into beds that will keep animals off the chilly ground.
The Cluny Animal Trust was founded in 2011. The organisation serves small towns in part of the Free State, namely Clarens and Fouriesburg, with a focus on the township communities.
The Trust was placed on our radar in mid-2019 when they started making 100 dog kennels to get through the freezing cold winters. They gave the kennels to families from local informal settlements, thus ensuring each pet had somewhere safe to sleep during the cold weather.
When the pandemic rolled around, the organisation again rallied supporters, this time making up pet food parcels. They handed out hundreds of bags of pet food so that pet owners wouldn’t have to worry about the animals going hungry.
Being located in the Free State, winters get bitterly cold so every warming donation is welcomed. These beds will go a long way to keeping beloved pets off the cold ground. The trust shared the happy news of their donation online and supporters are loving the ingenuity of using recycled materials.
“20 BEDS SPECIALLY MADE TO HAND OUT TO ANIMALS IN NEED, ALL MADE FROM RECYCLED MATERIALS!
As the saying goes…one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, well in this case it would be right to say, doggy treasure!
A very special thank you to a wonderful Clarens local, Hilton Abrahamse, who made 20 beds for animals in need all from recycled materials.
This initiative really deserves heaps of praise, and we are always so appreciative of the community of Clarens who continue to come together to help us to support animals in need.
Nico knows who the responsible pet owners are and whose dogs could do with a little comfort. And it was lovely to see how excited they were when they came to our Dip Day and went home with a dog bed as well.
Please join us in thanking Hilton, for his time and efforts, we are truly grateful to him for his ongoing support for what we do.”
Last year, a donor also made sure Nico was kept warm by knitting him a jersey and matching beanie. You can see his heartwarming reaction here.
