A cow sanctuary will offer Hindu devotees a tangible way to connect with the divine through nurturing, feeding, and cuddling these sacred beings.
Durban, South Africa (30 August 2024) – The construction of a cow sanctuary at the Shree Emperumal Temple in Chatsworth, Durban, is a testament to the deep-rooted reverence Hindus have for the cow, known as Gomatha.
According to the temple’s Thaniga Moodley, this sacred animal is believed to be the mother of all children and a symbol of pure love, abundance, and auspiciousness.
The cow sanctuary, also referred to as a goshala, will allow devotees to connect with these sacred beings on a personal level, nurturing, feeding, and cuddling them.
Speaking to Good Things Guy, Shree Emperumal Temple’s resident priest, Guruparan Gurukkal, shared:
“The cow sanctuary will be at our temple for worship purposes. Devotees will come out and worship the cow goddesses in hopes of addressing the different difficulties in their lives.
“For now there will be two cows and devotees will get to be around and feed the cows,” shared Gurukkal who confirmed that all vet medical checks and protocols were in place to ensure the cows would be cared for and well taken care of.
As the temple prepares to celebrate its centennial birthday, the goshala, planned to open on 7 September, symbolises a commitment to preserving ancient traditions and fostering a sense of community.
