The seaside town won the Eastern Cape leg of the competition in early May, where it went forward to represent the province for a chance at the final title. The prize money, a whopping R1-million. The money is to be used to help boost the town for locals and tourists.

The humble town is a world-class surfing hotspot, according to CNN Travel, the town is the second-best surfing spot in the world! Plus it helps that they have a coveted Blue Flag Beach title as well!

“We are so grateful for the win this year because we just missed it a few years ago. This win means the world to our town. The financial implications are so needed in order to better serve our community; both tourists and residents. The boost our town will receive is much more than financial, as the long term effects will be a huge benefit to the tourism industry and local businesses too. And it simply makes us proud to be a “jay-bayer” – Tania Botha – De Meillon
