Janu-Worry Joburg Ballet

The Breaking Ballet videos created by Joburg Ballet have changed the way South Africans see the art form. Moving from classical to modern, people love it!

Ballet has been around for a very long time and has, over time, created a collection of famous productions. Many of these classics are beautiful and well worth a trip to go watch but they are slowly becoming outdated as time moves forward.

Swan Lake, La Bayadere, Giselle… These are some of the most famous ballets of all time and can bring tears to the eye of any ballet lover but younger audiences have very little interest in them.

As generations move on, these classics are not deemed as important and the art suffers. Fewer tickets are sold and before we know it, whole production companies are closed.

It was this thought that spurred Joburg Ballet to find new and modern means to promote the art form to younger audiences. That is why they started their trendy and viral ‘Breaking Ballet‘ campaign.

By focusing on trending news topics, the ballet company was able to breathe new life into their audience and captivate thousands of people who would have otherwise, not looked twice at ballet as an entertainment option.

They recently published a case study on YouTube which stated that their ticket sales have been at an all-time high. This was thanks to videos such as the ‘Rain Dance‘ which they did in Cape Town back in 2017. That story was one of our top trending stories in December last year or their recent ‘Black Panther‘ tribute.

By performing these “Breaking Ballet” pieces, they broke their classical mould and have entered a new era of dance in South Africa. Take a look at their success below
