The Johannesburg Planetarium has undergone a huge upgrade and makeover to become a Digital Dome. Now, it’s open to the public once again and ready to take us all closer to the stars.
Johannesburg, South Africa (12 March 2025) — The Wits Angelo American Digital Dome (formerly the Johannesburg Planetarium) has long been a spot where people of all ages come to step out of their own worlds and into our vast, intergalactic neighbourhood.
The planetarium stood proudly for decades as the portal to the ‘beyond’. Recently, however, it underwent a major upgrade and a starry-eyed makeover to enhance the space in all kinds of wonderful ways, seeing it transform into the Digital Dome it’s known as today.
The space re-opened to the public in February, and those who haven’t been to the planetarium in a minute can look forward to a whole new space-exploration experience.
The name ‘Digital Dome’ fits the bill for good reason—there are several high-resolution projectors, interactive educational resources and surround-sound tech and new means of storytelling supported by digital advancement.
Additionally, the upgrade welcomed new seating (it has a maximum capacity of 200) and even new gardens.
Visitors can look forward to more than just planetarium-typical content, too. The Digital Dome can take guests anywhere—from the sea to the stars. Or, how about something closer to home? The ‘Mysteries of Your Brain’ show is currently on—a journey into another universe that is the human brain!
