A wave of hope has arrived at Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital thanks to the gift of a cutting-edge burns laser.

Johannesburg, South Africa (24 August 2025) – More hope just landed at Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital. Thanks to an incredible group effort, children recovering from burns will now have access to world-class treatment and more comfort along their healing journeys.

The Avela Foundation, Smile Foundation, and Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels listeners have come together to deliver a state-of-the-art Alma iPixel CO₂ laser to the paediatric hospital.

Essentially, it’s the gold standard in scar treatment, known around the world for helping to effectively heal damaged skin.

The technology behind the new laser gently resurfaces skin, helps break down tough scar tissue, and speeds up recovery. Unlike older ablative lasers, it works fractionally to create tiny pixel-sized holes in skin, sparing surrounding tissue.

It means shorter hospital stays, fewer anaesthetics, and more comfort for the hospital’s young burn victims.

And it gives them a better chance to feel like themselves again.

“At Avela Foundation, our mission has always been to restore dignity and confidence to young burn survivors,” says the organisation’s founder, Cami Palomo.

Funds have also been raised to help cover surgeries, counselling for young patients and their families, travel costs, and medical supplies. More kids can now be treated, and families get the vital support they need.

“Together, these interventions ensure that children receive holistic care, from surgical treatment to emotional and logistical support.”

“We are deeply grateful to every single supporter who made this possible.” says Moira Gerszt, Acting CEO of Smile Foundation.

Thankfully, more young burn survivors can look forward to a future where their stories aren’t defined by their scars.
