The annual SPAR Women’s Challenge has been moved from its usual Winter setting to a new date in Spring, giving women a warming start to Spring activities.
South Africa (10 July 2024) – A new date promises to put an extra “spring” in the step of participants in the 2024 SPAR Women’s Challenge in Gqeberha.
For the first time in its 30-year history the popular event – tagged the Bay’s Most Beautiful Road Race – will be held in spring rather than on the cusp of winter.
Recognising the surge in popularity of road running in the wake of the pandemic, SPAR Eastern Cape opted to move the 10km and 5km road runs from late-May to September 21.
“This year’s event is an opportunity to celebrate your unique journey and the strength that comes from prioritising yourself on race day,” SPAR EC advertising manager Roseann Shadrach said.
The Women’s Challenge is known for its family-friendly and community-spirited atmosphere and presents the ideal opportunity for the city’s women to gather for a fun and healthy day out.
“In life’s vibrant tapestry, each step we take weaves our unique story,” she said.
Whether running, walking or cheering from the sidelines, this year’s theme – #ChooseYou – calls women to chase their dreams, empower themselves and, in turn, inspire and uplift those around them.
“Often, we prioritise uplifting others, neglecting ourselves. Yet, by investing in our own growth, we become catalysts for positive change,” Shadrach said.
“By chasing your dreams with courage and determination, you light the way for every woman who follows.”
After visits to Cape Town, Windhoek (Namibia), Durban, Mbombela, Tshwane and Pietermaritzburg, the Gqeberha leg is the second-last port of call in this year’s series.
The final event takes place in Johannesburg on October 6.
Apart from its new spot on the calendar, the organisers have redesigned the course to encourage fast times by the elites competing in the Athletics SA-sanctioned SPAR Grand Prix Series 10km race.
Another significant development is that entries are online-only this year.
“We are committed to reducing paper use to help conserve our precious environment,” Shadrach explained.
As consumers were increasingly turning to e-commerce, she said online entries were another way of connecting and engaging with them.
At the 2023 event, a run-for-a-cause component was introduced. It proved an overwhelming success as participants were given the opportunity to be part of the greater good.
Simply by entering this year, runners will get the chance to help others. Funds raised will be allocated to SPAR’s pillars of education, nutrition and women empowerment.
Shadrach said the SPAR Women’s Challenge remained the Group’s premier annual event.
“Even with more races added to the calendar after Covid, we are so proud that we are the only brand that hosts a road-running event solely for women.
“Women empowerment is a key focus area within our business and community. We will continue to grow the Bay’s most beautiful road race in a way that will bring joy to thousands each year.”
Entries are now open here.
What an inspiring read! This new women’s challenge slot is sure to motivate and empower runners. Kudos to the organizers for creating such a positive initiative!
