new york city

The Good Things Guy is heading to New York this week, we thought we would share the best places to eat South African food in the city that never sleeps.

Good Things Guy, Brent Lindeque has been invited to New York to go find all the good things and good news. While there he will need to eat, so we thought we would compile a list of restaurants that serve South African food (you know, just in case he misses home).

Before we kick off our list here is a fun fact about restaurants in New York… Did you know there are so many restaurants in New York that you could eat out every single night for 54 years and never eat at the same place twice!

Here is a break down of where to eat and what you can expect there:

Madiba Brooklyn

The Madiba Restaurant is situated in Brooklyn, NY and has recently celebrated its 18th anniversary.

They serve local and lekker dishes like Samoosas, Oxtail, Biltong, Chicken Livers, Pap en Boerewors and even “Lekker Lamb Chops”. The dessert menu is filled with delicious classics such as Malva Pudding and Melktert, obviously, the wine selection in South African too.

“Since 1999, Madiba Restaurant has been bringing the home cooking of South African Kitchens to New York tables. From Portuguese spice to Indian Curries and African legumes Madiba Restaurant tips a hat to South African street food – from inner-city market to harbour landing.”

The Kaia Wine Bar‘s motto is “Home is where the hut is”. It is located in Yorkville, Upper East Side, New York City. The menu is predominantly Afrikaans but has translations for each dish. The bar serves over 50 South African wines and cocktails with a South African twist.

Their menu has a unique take on South African food with items such as Rooibos Tee En Bosbessie Vark Ribbetjies (rooibos tea and cranberry BBQ pork ribs) and the classic Bunny Chow. They also offer unique sliders.
