One five-month-old’s brave fight for sight has turned into a heartwarming movement of support for 20 more mothers and babies who walk this challenging path every day.

Durban, South Africa (26 February 2026) – Most would agree that some professions require more heart, grit, and resilience than others. Child welfare ranks high on that list. It is a field that is as heartbreaking as it is profoundly rewarding. This is a reality the Isaiah 54 Children’s Sanctuary knows all too well.

This week, the team experienced both ends of that emotional spectrum. They returned to the pediatric eye clinic with a five-month-old baby girl who first arrived at the sanctuary as an abandoned, premature baby facing complex medical complications.

While they celebrate her incredible development despite such a difficult start, she still requires advanced eye care – a journey the sanctuary has been steadily and faithfully walking with her.

“The veins in her eyes are growing outward, slowly making their way to where they are supposed to be. They are not fully there yet, but they are moving in the right direction. We go back in 4 weeks. If those veins haven’t reached the outer edge of her eye, the doctor will need to do a small laser procedure to close that gap,” shared Jo, who helps run the children’s sanctuary.

The child’s carers are hopeful that her little body will do what it needs to do and that no procedure will be necessary.

However, during that clinic visit, something else happened. That wave of heartbreak came in unexpectedly.

The team noticed many other mothers. Mothers who show up every few weeks, no matter how tired, alone or scared they are, seeking care for their little premmie warriors.

“They carry these fragile but fierce little humans into appointments after appointments. You can see the exhaustion in their eyes. You can see the love, too. They are trying so hard to be everything their baby needs… and somewhere in that fight, they forget themselves,” Jo said.

Though she was at that clinic for her little girl, in that moment, a compelling feeling stirred in Jo: To stand with these resilient mothers who oftentimes have no one in their corner.

“So, I am putting together 20 PreMama Packs for 20 brave mommies and their babies. Small bags filled with love. Practical things. Comfort things. Little reminders that someone sees them too.”

To make this happen, she is appealing to individuals and companies to kindly donate products and maybe even a little note of encouragement to a mom who desperately needs it.

This could be self-care items, baby essentials or financial contributions so Isiaiah 54 can build these packs beautifully.

“I will be back there in four weeks. Let’s show up for the mommies who show up every single time. Everything helps. Everything matters. Let’s make these packs something they will remember. Something that makes them feel seen. Something that whispers, “You are doing so well, mama.”
