Every child deserves a fair start, regardless of where they are born. From mentorship for educators to essential nutrition, Masikhule is providing the tools to build a brighter future for marginalised communities.
Helderberg, South Africa (25 February 2026) – Nestled in the Helderberg area of the Western Cape, Masikhule is an NPO dedicated to transforming Early Childhood Development (ECD) within marginalised communities.
Founded in 2005 by Léanne Keet, an Occupational Therapist (OT), Masikhule’s training has developed over the years to integrate OT into their Early Learning Programs (ELPs) to make sure no child, regardless of their starting point, is left behind.
“Our range of services includes training and mentorship of community-based ECD educators, nutrition and resources for the ECD centres they work in,” says Sandy Immelman, who runs Maskhule’s marketing and communications.
The reality for many community-based ECD centres is a difficult one. Tight budgets and limited space often mean they lack the tools to provide the high-quality, diverse learning experiences every child deserves.
This is exactly where Masikhule steps in.
How Masikhule is Making a Difference
“To address this, we created an Early Learning Resource Library in 2015. It started in a shipping container in an area that was accessible to most of the centres, and the staff could come and collect what they needed every two weeks and return the previous items to us,” Sandy explains.
Masikhule’s Resource Library provides around 60 ECD centres with regular access to a large variety of educational resources.
These include theme bags with activity ideas and materials necessary to implement its Early Learning Program, age- and language-appropriate educational toys, games and books for the children, as well as inspirational books for the educators, posters, fantasy corner dress-up items and much more!

When the organisation moved into an office in Somerset West in 2021, it opened its Resource Library next door and started to deliver the resources to the ECD centres themselves.
“This not only saved the ECD centres’ transport costs but also meant none of the staff had to leave the centres to do the collections. Our delivery service ensures resources are delivered to members on a fortnightly basis – they simply send in their orders, we pack what they request, deliver to them and collect the previous items.”
Masikhule has an amazing team of volunteers who meet at the Resource Library on a weekly basis to go through each of the theme bags returned to ensure no items are missing from the theme bags for the next centre, and that everything is clean and neat.
MasiVan Ensures Learning Materials Get Further
“Our Resource Library has been extremely successful – but the best was yet to come! Towards the end of 2024, one of our very special donors, ILANGA Foundation, sponsored a delivery vehicle for us.”
This wonderful, branded delivery vehicle, named ‘MasiVan’, has meant staff no longer need to use their own vehicles for deliveries. They team up, and there is more space to accommodate the delivery items like themed bags, ensuring children enjoy a variety of themed-based books, games, toys and posters every month.

As a result, Masikhule’s deliveries and the number of items delivered have increased, ensuring ECD teachers and the children in their classrooms have access to a greater variety of resources. And the numbers speak for themselves. In 2025, Masikhule made a total of 954 deliveries, which amounted to 32,872 items received by the ECD centres – impressively providing the tools to build brighter futures for the Helderberg area and surrounds.
