Over 2,500 braai enthusiasts gathered at Loftus Versfeld to attempt a Guinness World Record for the most people braaiing at the same time, celebrating Heritage Day with fun.
Pretoria, South Africa (26 September 2025) – A few weeks ago, many were surprised to learn that Japan currently holds the record for the world’s largest braai. For a nation celebrated for its grilling culture, that simply could not stand. In honour of this year’s Heritage Day, South Africans set out to reclaim the title with the country’s biggest braai festival.
The current record holder is Ishigaki City in Japan, with 2,220 people achieving the record in November 2023.
Over 2,500 braai enthusiasts gathered at Loftus Versfeld, ready to fire their grill. Together, they cooked half a ton of meat across 420 custom-built braai stands, filling the stadium with the aroma of boerewors.

While the grilling was spectacular, the official confirmation of the record will take a few days. Participants and attendees will need to wait for Guinness World Records to verify whether South Africa has successfully overtaken Japan as the holder of the world’s largest braai.
For now, let’s just forget about the record and try to comprehend the fact that over 2000 people gathered for Heritage Day to braai. Now that was a true celebration of food and South African pride.
