Cape Town is gearing up for another bumper summer season, which kicks off with a long-standing tradition: the switch-on of the festive lights on Sunday 3 December 2017 at the Grand Parade.

An integral part of this tradition is the free concert, from 16:00, featuring a line-up of top local artists. Last year, for the first time, we gave our home-grown talent the opportunity to be discovered and perform alongside the big names lined up for the evening.

This year Capetonians will once again be able to vote for an undiscovered local act that they want to see become the next big star on the festive lights stage.

This exciting competition is a demonstration of our commitment to building an inclusive city and our support for up-and-coming local talent. In line with our Organisational Development and Transformation Plan, we are looking to take opportunities directly to residents.

The search for Cape Town’s next big music act will be run on indi.com – a social video talent platform.

“I call on our talented Cape Town-based artists to give it a bash and participate in the challenge. All you need to do is upload your videos to indi.com and then share your entries across social media platforms. The idea is to attract the highest number of likes to be crowned the winner and walk away with the R10 000 cash prize and the honour of performing at the festive lights event.”

Budding artists can visit any of the City’s libraries and make use of the free internet access via the SmartCape facilities to upload their videos and artwork. The steps to upload to indi.com are as follows:

  • Click on ‘sign in’ in the top right corner of the site
  • Sign up as a new user and create a username
  • Click on the challenge you want to take part in
  • Click on the big green ‘submit picture/video’ button
  • Follow the simple instructions to upload your video

If you use a smartphone to upload your video, the following steps will apply:

  • Open the indi.com app
  • Click on the challenge you want to take part in
  • Click on the ‘submit’ button at the bottom of your screen
  • Follow the simple instructions to upload your video

The Festive Lights Challenge on indi.com goes live today, 10 November and runs until 28 November 2017. The competition is open to Cape Town artists only.

The challenge can also be found via the following link: http://indi.com/coct/festivelightsindichallenge

The site’s unique algorithm aggregates ‘likes’ across all platforms, resulting in an artist’s standing on the ‘buzz meter’, with the winner being the one who attracts the most ‘buzz points’.

If users run into any problems while uploading their entry, they can contact Jeni Fletcher via email to jeni@networxpr.co.za or on 021 201 1522.
